Learning through Loggerheads

Meg is the co-creator and executive director of the non-profit Learning through Loggerheads (LtL). This one-of-a-kind program uses a sea turtle protection project to provide hands on conservation learning for middle and high school students. The beaches of Botany Bay Plantation and Botany Island host the second largest nesting aggregation of loggerhead sea turtles on the South Carolina coast. Students participate in all aspects of the sea turtle management program from finding and protecting nests, to recording data and maintaining the equipment. To find out more about this project and how to support it, please visit www.ltlonline.org or join one of our summer turtle program which helps to fund Learning through Loggerheads. See the Program page for information.

    About Us
How can a guided tour make a visit to the South Carolina Lowcountry special?
We will allow you to see the area in a way you may never have imagined. Our guides are natives of South Carolina who delight in sharing its unique coastal ecosystem with others.  Our local knowledge is enhanced by in depth study in biology, wildlife ecology, and natural resource management. Our founder, Meg Hoyle, credits her extensive field work abroad with teaching her to fully appreciate the wonder and diversity of the area she calls home. She studied wildlife utilization on the savannahs of Kenya and Zimbabwe, tropical ecosystems in the Australian rainforest and conducted sea turtle research in the Caribbean. Meg carefully selects other trip leaders who share her passion for interpreting the natural world.

Meg enthusiastically describes the South Carolina coast as “every bit as exciting as exotic locales such as the Great Barrier Reef or tropical rainforests. There is something for everyone to learn from areas like this.”
